On 25 November 2013, Microsoft Studios announced Halo 3: ODST, to be released for Xbox 360 in 2014. The game was released for Microsoft Windows in November 2014 as a standalone title. Like the original Halo 3, it was developed by Bungie with the assistance of Turn 10 Studios.
To promote Halo 3: ODST, Microsoft commissioned the Halo 3: ODST machinima film, which was made by Ninja Theory. A number of new scenes were added to the machinima to make it a more film-like production, including more dialogue, more cinematography, and more characters. Some sequences were filmed at Maidstone Studios, outside London.
Plot
In the wake of the Covenant's defeat at the end of the first game, UNSC and UNSC Infinity crew of Spartan soldiers begin to arrive at the UNSC Forward Operating Base (FOB) orbiting Installation 03 to join the UNSC Master Chief in combat in the Retribution (Heaven's Gate) and their respective battle against the Flood on the planet Reach. The Spartan-IV John-117 and his team leader, Jack "Hawk" Marr, are deployed to the planet Reach in the Forward Operating Base by UNSC Infinity to meet the Master Chief.
Their mission is to re-capture the Forerunner Pillar of Autumn that contains a device that can destroy the Flood. However, the Pillar has been moved into a heavily defended network of Forerunner installations.
After combat in the Pillar of Autumn, a kamikaze attack is launched on Infinity, killing most of the crews. The Pillar is detonated and destroyed by the Covenant, leaving John-117 and the surviving crew to return to FOB 395. However, a small group of Flood are already aboard the Forerunner ship, taking the survivors as hosts.
The Spartans must eliminate the Flood and prevent them from capturing the installation in order to prevent the Forerunners from launching a counter-offensive against the humans.
Gameplay
Halo 3: ODST follows the plot of Halo 3 and features some elements from Halo 2 and Halo 3, such as co-op, gunplay, combat, and character development. All characters are able to ride a vehicle called the "Dreadnought" which allows the player to travel over land and into water.
